My Story

Hi All,

I’m doing the 100 mile RideLondon on Sunday 26th of May to raise money for Together We Learn.

Together We Learn is a charity that helps Ethiopian children remain in education which Nadine and I have supported since 2012.

Together We Learn is a merger of Link Ethiopia and The Kindu Trust, two charities that have been working to brighten the prospects of children in Ethiopia for more than 20 years.

Together We Learn exists to help disadvantaged young people gain equal access to quality education because they believe in the power of education to break the cycle of poverty by enabling children to learn, grow and access opportunities.  Children are at the centre of Together We Learn’s work and their interventions are aimed at improving the quality of teaching and facilities within Ethiopian schools and working with communities to overcome obstacles to school attendance.

How does Together We Learn do this:

·        Student sponsorship – Direct financial support so students are able to stay at school.  So far 1500 students have been or are currently being supported.

·        School construction – building new education facilities to improve quality and increase access.  To date 75 new classrooms have been built, 86 libraries have been renovated and resourced, 63 sanitation facilities have been installed and 5 computer labs set up.

·        Girls education – removing obstacles that prevent girls from staying at school.  To date 757 girls have been receiving targeted support and 600 reuseable period packs have been distributed.

·        Teacher Training - working with the regional education bureaus in two regions to improve literacy outcomes, 1,200 teachers were trained just this year, reaching over 72,000 students.

Nadine and I started sponsoring a boy, who is from a town 150km south of Addis Ababa, in 2012 when he was 9 years old.  The boy lived with his Mother and siblings in very modest conditions.  With our £19 per month and the support of the Together We Learn team, he has been able to complete his school & college education and has just completed a University degree in Applied Chemistry. He is one of about 10 sponsored students to graduate university this year.  He now hopes to work in medicine or continue studying chemistry at masters level.

Some of the things we really like about Together We Learn are:

·       Although Together We Learn are a UK based Charity, they are also registered as a local charity in Ethiopia where all operations are run by Ethiopians (see https://twlethiopia.org/about-us/our-team/ )

·        Again, although Together We Learn are a UK based charity, UK costs are kept to a minimum (small team, small marketing budget and no big flashy offices) to ensure the maximum amount of funds raised are spent where they are needed - which is in Ethiopia!
